Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans reports preliminary conclusions of a department study urging a provincial bank as a practical and desirable step to stimulate Manitoba's economy. The study cites $300 million more deposits than loans in Manitoba banks, trust companies and insurers, rising to $432 million if only chartered banks are counted. Deposits total about $1,265 million with loans at $833 million, signaling substantial provincial funds invested outside Manitoba and prompting calls for real local competition beyond a token, national cartel. WINNIPEG Health and Social Development Minister Rene E. Toupin announced an amendment to a regulation under the Social Allowance Act clarifying social assistance for single adults. Parental assistance is considered a financial resource for all applicants except those married, and a signed statement from the parent may confirm inability to provide full support and what support remains. Municipalities may follow government guidelines in setting or amending social assistance by laws.
The Women's Aid to the Hamiota Hospital District No. 7A met Friday April 23 in the Community Room Hamiota with fourteen districts represented. A letter of congratulations was approved for all practical nurses graduating replacing the twenty dollars gratuity. Five accredited hospitals in the West-Man region were noted. An assistant caretaker named Duncan Mathison. Oakner donated an overbed table. A near future food clinic was planned in Hamiota. Carman Hospital Aid was reported on. Florence Nightingale tea plans were finalized and a Regional Meeting set for May 20 in the Community.
