Premier Ed Schreyer previews the Brandon western premiers conference May 5 and 6. Topics span constitutional trends, transportation and rail issues, agriculture with drought concerns, and Western economic cooperation including trade and tariffs.
Winnipeg Attorney General Howard Pawley announced a stronger enforcement policy for Criminal Code gaming provisions to be adopted in 1977. Police in Winnipeg and Manitoba RCMP will carry out the program, with licensing for games of chance handled by the Manitoba Lotteries Licensing Board and distributed to fairs and midway operators. Prosecutions will follow for unapproved games.
Agrologists in Manitoba's Southwest region urge conservation of scarce soil moisture this spring. Seed into moist compact soil, avoid pre seeding tillage if possible, and use shallow cultivation to preserve moisture. For wheat oats and barley target 5 to 8 cm depth, adjust seed spouts, and ensure soil packs behind seeding to aid germination. Emphasizes leaving mulch to curb erosion and maximize moisture use.
Teams from Hamiota Souris and Birtle competed in the Badminton Tournament held at Hamiota Collegiate on April 23. Winners in each division included Dallas Strachan with Ron Meakin and Bruce Mc Farlane with P Melnyk. McFarlane and Melnyk beat Strachan and Meakin in semis then beat Revel and Sararas 2 1 in the final. Round robin results had Bray and Brown in front, followed by McFarlane Melnyk and Robinson Davies. McFarlane and Melnyk beat Robinson Davies to reach the finals again, then defeated Bray and Brown 2 1. In the final round robin playoff Shauna McKinnon Leila Patterson and Melnyk Tack played best of three with McKinnon Patterson taking top. The day drew praise for good competition and organizers Brian Revel Don Mac Donald and Dale Sunley. A FASTBALL CLINIC May 15 at Kenton School offers Umpires Crest attendance via Recreation Office.
Winnipeg Manitoba Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans announced the department helped create or salvage between 1,800 and 1,900 jobs in the past year, with $50.8 million in income and total benefits over $80 million including social cost savings. Examples include Monarch Industries Winkler plant, GTE Lenkart Inkster plant, Inventronics Brandon, and Berkley and Company Portage plant, plus other expansions such as MacDon Industries and Jordan and Ste. Michelle Cellars.
Hecla Island course opens for the 1977 season with the Falcon Beach layout ready Friday. New rate schedule lists four dollar green fees weekdays and holidays, twilight rates at 1.25 for all ages after 4 p.m. Weekends mirror weekday rates until 6 p.m. The plan includes other Manitoba industry updates and Ottawa-style development aims.
