Plant Growth Meeting Highlights Topics For Farmers

The Hamiota Agricultural Society and the Manitoba Department of Agriculture sponsor a Plant Growth meeting with Gerry Gramiak and Joe Tsukomota discussing soil needs, nutrient use, and above soil requirements. Held at Hamiota Community Hall with registration at 10 and meeting at 10:15, coffee and doughnuts served. Special Crops session planned at Brandon Extension Centre on March 21 with Dave Derksen detailing outlook, practices, fertilizer needs, weed control, and net returns. Program starts at 10:00 am. Cattle shipments from Alberta in 1968 totalled 292 439 head, up 86 percent from the prior year, with Ontario receiving over half. Blanshard Hamida Miniota Weed Office now located in the old telephone building recently purchased by the Weed Board.

Birdtail River School Board Holds Shoal Lake Meeting

The Birdtail River School Division No 38 board met in Shoal Lake on March 13 1969 with trustees Fulton Rapley Selby Randell Hames Lewycky Butcher Hyndman Waddell Falloon Armitage and inspectors Bollman Callender Decosse Funk Partridge present. They adopted minutes, approved a $1500 lot purchase in Birtle, reviewed correspondence and finance, appointed Selby as agent of record, authorized building payments at Hamita Collegiate, reinvested the James Jackson Scholarship fund in a five year Royal Bank certificate at 7.4 percent, increased Route 97 pay by 2.80 per day, and planned a new meeting for March 20 1969.

Manitoba prepares for National Health Week March 9 to 15 as Health and Social Services Minister George Johnson notes the province's unified department supports coordinated care. He cites vaccines, cancer and heart disease prevention, home care plans, and family planning clinics as key focuses while acknowledging ongoing bed shortages and a need for expanded services.

Miniota 4 H Public Speaking Winners Named Shuttleworth Trophy

Lucille Goodwin of the Miniota Merry Home Makers won the Shuttleworth Trophy at the 4 H senior public speaking contest hosted by the Miniota Beef Club on March 6 at the Miniota Community Centre. Glen Stynyk and Kim McConnell of the McConnell Beef Club placed second and third. Other speakers included Darryl Boyd and Wilma Hankin. Judges were Miss T Holtman Virden Mr R Poole Hamiota and Mr L Muldowan Miniota. The top three advance to further competitions.

Manitoba Vacation Handbook for 1969 Released

The 1969 Manitoba Vacation Handbook, compiled by the Tourism and Recreation Department, is now available. John B. Carroll announces over 200000 copies are produced yearly for Manitoba’s major tourist markets. The 140 page color handbook lists hotel ratings, points of interest, events, liquor outlet locations, hunting and angling rules, convention facilities, and more. Copies can be obtained from the Tourist Reception Office in Winnipeg’s Legislative Building.
