What Happens to Old Railroad Ties
The Pennsylvania Railroad explains why worn ties are not freely reused on tracks. Some are sold cheaply to nearby residents as firewood, but delivering them safely is costly and access to tracks is dangerous. Dealers struggle to buy discarded ties due to damaged wood and safety concerns. The company prefers selling ties locally where delivery costs are minimal and asks for better disposal ideas. The Canadian Pacific Railway also gives away ties with guards but only where timber nearby is scarce, noting farmers sometimes repurpose ties rather than burn them.
