First Ready Made Garments in America Rise from Northfield Trade

The earliest ready made clothing in America were shirts for Indians and men’s breeches made at Northfield Massachusetts as early as 1725. The modern ready made clothing industry develops about a century later from second hand sailor trade expanding to cheaper garments and shirts. By 1835 ready made clothing becomes thriving though limited to cheap men’s wear. The sewing of clothing remains largely a home or shop hand process with cutting rooms first. The California gold rush of 1849 expands markets as the sewing machine, invented in 1846 by Elias Howe and improved by Isaak Singer shortly after, transforms production.
