Useless But Costly Weeds Threaten Crops and Pastures
Farm notes warn that Red Bartsia Leafy Spurge and Scentless Chamomile threaten crops across fields. Red Bartsia began at Gimli Air Force Base in 1940, spreading to cover 100 square miles and harming perennials. Leafy Spurge restricts grain and forage movement under the Noxious Weed Act. seeds travel via animals and waste, spreading quickly. Scentless Chamomile, spreading from the south along Highway 83, resists herbicides and requires cultivation and proper soil. The piece urges farmers to report odd plants, identifies office contacts in Miniota and Rivers, and promotes the Hamiota Shoal Lake 4H Rally on June 16 with a 1:00 p.m. parade.
