Agriculture Canada notes propose expanding Canada’s lamb and wool outputs to meet domestic demand. In 1973 Canadians consumed 82 million pounds of lamb and mutton while only 21.8 million were produced domestically. Wool production also lags far behind usage. The government backs expansion via the Canadian Sheep Marketing Council with 750,000 dollars over five years and ongoing transportation subsidies to move breeding stock east. Sheep graze on marginal land, requiring little grain, and yield nine lambs per six ewes, selling at 35 to 40 dollars each. The sector’s future hinges on steady retail demand and producer willingness to grow.
