Beef breeding with shorthorns at Indian Head

A federal farm at Indian Head Saskatchewan runs a long term beef breeding project using purebred Shorthorns. Each herd has 14 females and one bull and bulls up to three years old perform best with proper growth, exercise and foot care. Mature bulls feed on hay silage pasture with grain only if run down. Bulls receive mineral mix of 65 pounds bone meal and 35 pounds cobalt iodized salt plus Vitamin A. After breeding, bulls are housed on large pasture separate from others to prevent injury. Bulls are semen tested each spring. those out of condition are excluded. If failure to breed occurs it is usually temporary and corrected via ration, exercise or trimming. Spring and fall foot trimming helps. Lice control uses two spring and two fall sprayings with 0.05 percent Lindane. Warbles are controlled with a single pour on treatment.
