IMC potash mine to be world’s largest refinery in Hemisphere
IMC reaches 3140 feet in the Esterhazy seam after a five year effort overcoming a 200 foot quicksand layer and high water pressures. A 3000 ton cast iron shaft wall stabilizes the area while five mining machines dig through ore. Production targets 1.2 million tons annually by next year with 400 jobs, mainly local farmers trained. IMC operates Carlsbad NM mine as well, aiming to be the Western Hemisphere’s largest producer with two sources.
