Anniversary date for Mission Band and WMS at Arrow River

Community notice recalls July 24 as the 50th anniversary of the Mission Band and the WMS organization at Arrow River. Birdtail River trustees approve Hamiota High School heating bid

At Shoal Lake on July 5 1961 trustees Fulton Selby Stimpson Gamey Fraser and Hunter attended with architects Lindgren and Mullins. They approved June 28 minutes and accepted Marquette Steam Fitters tender for 19200 for heating and plumbing. They called for bids to supply about 500 student desks and 21 teacher desks for schools under construction.

Henry Arnold Dies at 78 in Miniota Funeral Planned

Henry Arnold, born in Qu Appelle Saskatchewan, died July 1 at Hamiota Hospital aged 78. Funeral services were July 3 at Holy Trinity Church Miniota with Rev. L Dodge. Pallbearers were Chas Bryant Les Bryant W C Barrett W A Barrett N J Leland and L Oliver. He resided in Miniota after retiring from the C N R and is survived by his wife and several children and grandchildren.

Industrial Accident Rate Drops in Manitoba May 1961

Manitoba's May 1961 industrial accident rate fell sharply from the prior year, according to Hon. J. B. Carroll minister of labor. He attributed the decline to improved safety measures and enforcement by provincial authorities.

Forest fires rage in Manitoba Whiteshell district

The worst Manitoba forest fires burn for weeks with 35 000 acres involved in Whiteshell. About 200 firefighters fight from bases around Crow Duck Lake as a soldier civilian team wets down underbrush. Supplies and men are flown in to the thickly forested area.

Mimota Farmers Seek Disaster Aid after Drought

The R M of Mimota council asks the Provincial government to pressure Ottawa to declare the municipality a disaster area. A 175 farm ratepayers meeting revealed 62 percent of farms affected, with 95 percent in mixed farming and shortages of feed and water.

Lorna Jean Heamen became the bride of Robert Neil Rowan on June 10 at St. Paul’s United Church Virden. Rev S A Walmsley officiated with Wes Heamen giving the bride in marriage. The gown was lace over satin with lily point sleeves and seed pearls.
