A Greenbelt for Canada s National Capital
The National Capital Commission plans for Ottawa and its 13‑municipality metro area to grow to 645000 by 1976. The Greenbelt, a 41500 acre circular belt known as the Capital s Emerald Necklace, controls sprawl, links city to countryside, spurs renewal, and provides farms, parks, and recreation while conserving water and wildlife. An extensive reforestation program, including 1.7 million saplings on 2000 acres, will enhance conservation and potentially form a game preserve and natural park in the future.
