Farm Notes on Rolling Calves Into Pasture Pasture Rotation

Farm Notes describe a trial where three parts hay and forage were fed to one part barley. Calves reached yearling size at about 750 pounds and were moved to fall rye paddocks in late May. Rotations across grass and grass-alfalfa, aided by a mobile electric fence, allowed four to five grazings in 128 days, yielding average 309 pounds of beef from late May to mid September. Fertilizer applied was 450 lb per acre for grass and 350 lb per acre for alfalfa. Tests show 18 pounds daily grain on pasture matched seven pounds daily grain finishing. Peter aims to raise stocking and lower summer costs, targeting beef at 12 cents a pound.
