Windbreaks for Livestock and Shelterbelt Benefits
Shelterbelts offer broader protection than porosity fences due to greater height, shielding larger areas from snow drift into cattle pens. The taller trees provide a wider barrier, though porosity fences also help reduce drifting. Farm Notes.
Livestock Shelterbelts Improve Wind Protection and Gains
Alberta researchers note windbreaks reduce wind speed and temperature effects, boosting cattle performance. Shelterbelts help control snow near livestock, with gains possible in milder climates when roofed housing isn’t needed. Design includes fencing to protect trees and drainage for effluent. February 28 deadline for applications. Remaining species include caragana, willow and acacia.
