A report urges a new division within the Canadian Farm Loan Board to provide loans exceeding 60 percent of farm value. Local farmer committees would approve borrowers who face variable land values and income. The plan emphasizes borrower participation, appraisal challenges, and prepayment options to cover poor years. A Saskatchewan game branch team flown to northern regions set out 51 poison bait stations as part of a four winter effort to curb timber wolves. Harold Read said wolf predation reduces caribou herds, with barrenland caribou declines cited from 1,750,000 in 1900 to about 670,000 today. The 1080 poison is being tested in place of strychnine, with costs halved and no secondary poisoning expected after spring break-up.

Alberta farmer leader sees 1955 wheat marketing relief

C Marler of Bremner, president of the Alberta Federation of Agriculture, told Edmonton that prairie farmers may see reduced marketing problems in 1955. He cited stronger foreign demand lifting wheat sales to about 300 million bushels by July end and noted high quality wheat demand should rise as crops were poorer. The main challenge could be moves of roughly 150 million bushels of 1954 low grade wheat. He said prices could hold or improve slightly in 1955.
