No Longer Vital Matters: Prairie Farming Shifts Focus
Exhibitors from Manitoba won ten first and twenty seven second prizes in livestock while Alberta farmers took eight first and twenty seven second prizes for butter. The Western provinces show large rye barley and oats growth with Ontario at 97 000 acres of rye and Saskatchewan 685 000 acres sown. Alberta 310 000 acres and Manitoba 69 000 acres yield nearly 20 million bushels. Mixed farming spread lowers wheat’s vital role as prosperity no longer hinges on this single crop.
