Birdtail River School Board Meets at Shoal Lake 1970

The Birdtail River School Division No 38 trustees met in Shoal Lake on March 26 1970 at 8 00 p m. Present were Fulton Waddell Rapley Randall Hames Patloon Armitage Lewycky Butcher Hyndman and Fouillard. Motions approved include adopting the March 12 1970 minutes granting 500 to the Birdtail River Fine Arts Festival selling the Newdale Consolidated School to the Agricultural & Community District for 1 00 and transferring legal responsibility, extending congratulations to Birtle staff for the Brandon Science Fair, installing fire equipment at Selsgirth School, accepting Howard Baldrow’s resignation, and tabling the bank building purchase and advertising all teacherages for sale. Meeting adjourned to April 9 1970 at 8 00 p m with adjournment at 12 30 a m.

Mange and weed control advisory for livestock and Leafy Spurge meeting

Farm notes describe mange in cattle horses and hogs caused by the Sarcoptes mite with symptoms and treatment options using Malathion and Lindane while warning a hogs waiting period before sale. It also notes Leafy Spurge becoming a problem and announces an Isabella Hall meeting on April 10 at 1 30 pm with Don Kennedy and Jim Lapka presenting weed information.

Farm Credit policy welcomed by Manitoba farmers

Manitoba farmers welcomed the Farm Credit Corporations lending policy during the last fiscal year. In the current season they borrowed 99 hog barns 14 dairy units 15 beef development loans and 473 other agricultural loans. As of January 1 1970 repayments were 85 percent up to date across accounts. Brandon area 66 loans totaling 1 822 600 Manitoba 631 loans totaling 17 738 300 and National 5 671 loans totaling 161 300 000. Manitoba crop insurance will expand to hail. A major program of market intelligence development and an electronic mail inform accounting system will aid farmers in decision making. The government proposes technical and financial help to municipalities for conservation to sustain the agricultural base.

Reggies Ramblings: three men imagine a million dollars

In the Steinbach Carillon News readers story Reggie recalls three fellows in the St Regis Forest Room Lounge discussing what they would do if given a million dollars. The first would buy a Gadillac and travel the world, the second would invest in bonds and buy a barber shop, and the third would keep farming until the money ran out.

Local C.G.L.T Holds Meeting at Miniota CGIT

MINIOTA Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bunn of the Birdtail Indian Reserve were guests of the Miniota CGIT March 26. The visitors spoke of reserve life and shared moccasins and head wear. On April 1 the group visited Isabella with Crandall and Dexter CGITs to hear Rev. Jacobs speak on Indians at the Anglican Church in Birtle. A social time and lunch followed, and the evening closed with Taps.

Park Residence News Deeply Read Week at Local Home

Mrs. Muriel Nelson Arm strong B C called on Mrs Hemphill last week. Sheila and Philip Norman Piney Man visited with Mrs Hemphill over the weekend. We welcome Mrs Hill of Ken ton to the residence. Her son from Killarney spent the weekend with her. Mr and Mrs Hill and Mrs Stan Gould visited with their mother on Sunday. Mrs Schacht returned from Uno where she spent the Easter holidays with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs J Rolio and family at their farm. Miss Ann Kreager of Brand on was a recent visitor with her grandmother Mrs Robertson Mrs Caldwell Sr Mrs Russell Mrs Kirk and Mrs Rhyne visited at the residence Sunday evening and joined in the sing song in the lounge. Visitors at the home of Mrs Gardham for the week were Brian Bob and Marilyn Gard ham Cheryl Thompson Roberta Leland Mrs Morrow Mrs F Watters Mrs H Gardham and Jean all of Arrow River Mrs Larry Hunkin and Wilma of Crandall Mrs D Beaton El phinstone and Mrs Orr of Fox Warren. Visitors with Grace Jory on the weekend were Mrs Ivan Sparks Miniota Mrs Keith Mc Connell Mrs Dorothy Kirk and Mrs J Rhyne. Mrs Delbridge accompanied by her two grandchildren Lori and Randy Lints of Decker spent a few days in Brandon with Mr and Mrs Gordon Church and Craig while the children's parents attended the Tom Thumb Hockey Tournament at Thompson over the weekend. Congratulations to all the players from Oak River Hamiota Decker and two boys from Elkhorn on winning the tournament and bringing home the cup for Oak River.
