District Haps and Mishaps in Hope Township

Friday a school house in Hope Township No 14 burned after rubbish was set ablaze in the yard. A new Independent Order of Foresters court formed with Reaburn as chief ranger and Alex Potts as vice chief. Thos H McQuade injured a finger in a cutting machine. D H Cornell sold a 2000 lb Durham bull to Aikin Bros for 80 dollars. Jim McCaffery’s dray horse escaped and is under care of Veterinary Waldon.

East Durham License Commissioners Licenses Issued at Port Hope

The East Durham License Commissioners met Saturday at Port Hope with Geo. Wilson chairing. Twelve licenses were signed for John Owens A A Adams Lawrence Haw James Sander son C Nixon Gerald Griffin Mary Christo her L G Bennett Thomas Plain Port Bruce and others in Millbrook Manvers and Hope. John Lee and J Kennedy of Manvers had licenses extended for three months. A shop license was granted to Simpson Reid James Hunter Port Hope and Alfred Leach Millbrook. A resolution states any licensee convicted twice in a year of liquor law violations loses renewal rights.

A four year old Walsh child was kicked by a colt in Perrytown with a fractured collar bone and bruises but is improving rapidly. Deaths include a Garden Hill child of Wesley Noden and Manvers township pioneer Henry Hart after horse kick injuries. Also notes on Mrs Gardiner recovering, Rev Johnston education sermon, and spring business brisk with new houses in Perrytown.

Mariposa Farmer Severely Injured by Bull

John Dames a well known Mariposa farmer was badly injured Thursday when a shorthorn Durham bull he owned for years attacked him in a stall as he tried to tie the animal. The bull knocked him down gored him and moaned him with a broken right arm a fractured leg a dislocated shoulder and many bruises. Dr Jeffers of Oakwood treated him and he narrowly survived.

Death of Mrs Mina Sanders in Peterboro described as fatal exposure

The body of Mrs Mina Sanders, who died at Nicholls hospital last Wednesday, was buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery after no one in Millbrook claimed the death. Authorities say she claimed she was seeking a house, was ill and hungry, fainted at the spot, and did not recover consciousness until morning. The piece urges better shelter for strangers and notes no one is to blame beyond her condition.
