Seen on King Street During The Week

Lyle Nattress heads for the pond with skates as four youngsters with sleds and two flying saucers seek snow. Monday morning brings several inches of snow, while Bev Reid’s bandaged hand and swollen fingers hint at a glass mishap. Cars struggle on the small grade by Mrs. Ball’s home as drizzle freezes and street sanding slows rush hour.

Millbrook Boy Gets Promotion in Navy List

Ottawa December 31 1956 Instructor Commander George Charles Edward Gray aged 42 of Millbrook Ontario and Halifax promoted from instructor lieutenant commander in the half year promotions list. He serves on the Educational Training School staff at HMCS Stadacona Halifax with a career including service on cruisers Ontario and Uganda and coastal postings. Gray, born in Millbrook, heads a family of nine with survivors in Millbrook Victoria BC Detroit Mich Picton Ontario and his wife Mary McKenzie Windsor where he was a principal. He attended Millbrook schools Peterborough Normal Western University Dalhousie and earned BA MA. He has two children Nancy and Marilyn and enjoys coin collecting and reading The Mirror-Reporter.

Weather Inches to 29 Below Zero Ice Sparks

The season opened with a cold snap. Sunday saw temperatures plunge to 29 degrees below in many parts, with the west end notably colder. Snow began Sunday night and covered the ground by Monday morning. Snow shovels were out, and ice formed at Millbrook and Cavan Memorial Arena, enabling first skating Monday afternoon and on New Year’s day.

Civil Defence Expert Lectures for Peterborough Police

Col Charles L Smith director of operations and training federal defence will address Peterborough Police School at Queen Mary Auditorium on Wednesday January 9. Chief John Naples says citizens are aware of national disaster plans and the lecture will update civil defence methods and coordination among agencies. The police are recruiting auxiliary officers to aid in disasters and Col Smith will present current tactics with films. Open invitation to district fire Red Cross St John Ambulance and civil defence workers and the public.
