Rails Through the Years A Canadian National Rail Overview
Rail remains serviceable for about 20 years depending on factors like curvature heat cold and salt air. Some rails laid in 1876 are still in use. Defective spots are found by Sperry Car tests and marked for immediate replacement. Ends of rails allow for expansion and contraction, worn sections are rebuilt by welding, and scrap rails are recycled into new rail. Canadian National engineers use advances to improve safety and efficiency of rail transportation.
