Canada’s first quarter trade totals dip from last year

Ottawa dispatch reports total trade for the first quarter at 8114 870 967, down 35 269 622 from the prior year. Imports reach 68 921 107, exports 45 949 860, with declines of 29 325 005 and 5 944 617 respectively. Customs revenue stands at 10 638 298, a drop of 4 231 968. Swift torpedo-boat destroyer ready for Clyde speed test

London despatch reports Cammell and Laird's Birkenhead yard launched a swift ocean going torpedo boat destroyer. Powered by turbines of 30 000 hp and oil fuel for 180 tons its aim is to outrun destroyers. Preliminary trial noted at 38 knots. forthcoming run expected to reach 39 knots.

Explosion on the Ragna at Tusket Wedge kills two

A Halifax despatch reports a boiler donkey engine explosion on the Norwegian bark Ragna at Tusket Wedge late Wednesday. Two men died instantly the carpenter and a seaman while two others were maimed one mate losing a leg and another seaman badly scalded. The captain notified Yarmouth and a tug carried the injured to Yarmouth.

Utica dispatch reports a De Kalb woman operating a mowing machine while her three and a half year old daughter picked berries. The blades severed the child's legs before the mother could stop the team and the child died, with the mother in mental distress.

Tragic squall sinks boat near Halifax basin

A Halifax despatch reports a late Wednesday tragedy at Bedford Basin when a calm afternoon boat trip turned deadly. Roy, 17, and Muir, 16, died after a thunderstorm capsized the craft, while Muir’s sister Margaret, 12, was rescued after about a half hour in the water.

A Quebec despatch notes the Empress of Ireland arriving shortly after eleven on Thursday night. The Duke of Norfolk and Lord Roberts landed Friday morning, with guests Earl Randurly Capt. Hon. Cecil Murray and Geo. Wolf driven to the Chateau Frontenac. The first dress rehearsal for the pageants drew thousands to the Plains of Abraham despite sold seats, and later the Venus collided with the Russell causing minor damage to both ships.

Parry Sound Burglary convict found dead in Kingston cell

A despatch from Kingston reports Frank Hogan a 25 year old prisoner from Parry Sound was found dead in his Kingston penitentiary cell on Friday morning. He had hanged himself with his suspenders after being sentenced in August 1906 to three years for burglary.
