In the dialogue, Ambrogio reacts to being likened to a wicked youth from legend and, blushing, accepts the comparison. Capt A W Porte of Oakville and former Toronto Biscuit Company manager collapsed and died in front of his sister Mrs George Brickenden's residence on Queen's Avenue in London at about 6 pm on Thursday. He said his heart was bad and it was dangerous to walk fast before he pitched forward. Porte was a well known London citizen before moving to Toronto 12 years ago and was about 60.
Elias Suya a 13 year old Syrian was arraigned on a stabbing charge after claiming self defense. He said his mother and sister tried to kill him over a $300 lost savings from a box in his room. He earned $8 to $12 weekly selling pictures door to door.
Victoria B C Finance Minister Tatlow announced a substantial surplus of 1.5 million and a 6 million revenue forecast for the next year. Expenditure at 5.5 million includes nearly 3 million for public works, debt reduced from 11 million to 9 million in a year, with plans for the Alberta and British Columbia grain route and the Panama Canal completion.
London dispatch reports Lord Loreburn upheld the Grand Trunk two cent rate on third class fares between Toronto and Montreal. The Privy Council found the 1906 Railway Act did not render the section invalid and declined to rule on whether the clause was left inadvertently or by design. The appeal was dismissed with costs.
Despatch from Brantford reports John Silversmith of Tuscarora Township has died in his 115th year. He retained his faculties until recently and was known as a basket-maker. The death was reported to Indian authorities.
Ottawa despatch reports the Canada Gazette issue announcing the Governor General in Council has disallowed the British Columbia Legislature Act of February 11 relating to immigration into the province known as the Natal Code.
Toronto markets show flour prices ranging from 3.90 to 5.60 on track and outside for export. Wheat prices for Manitoba and Ontario reflect No 1 and No 2 Northern grades, with rail and on track figures. Grains including oats rye barley corn and related commodities list various prices in cents or dollars across Ontario ports and outside markets.
Apples bring 4 to 4.50 dollars for choice quality and 3.50 to 4 for cooking. Beans prime 1.90 to 2 and hand picked 2.10 to 2.15 per bushel. Honey combs 2.25 to 2.75 per dozen, strained 11 to 14 cents per pound. Hay No 1 timothy 10.50 to 11 per ton, lower grades 9 to 10. Straw 6.50 to 7.50 on track. Ontario potatoes 65 cents per bag. Poultry chickens dressed 12 to 18 cents per pound, fowl 10 to 11, ducks 13 to 14, geese 12 to 13, turkeys 17 to 18 cents per pound.
The notice lists bacon at 11% to 11%c per pound in case lots, with hog and ham pricing ranging from 11%c to 23c, hams and shoulders at various percentages, and lard prices for tierces tubs and pails from 12%c to 13c per pound.
Montreal market notes various grain futures and cash prices for peas oats barley and flour products. It lists Ontario Manitoba and western Canadian prices for feed and milling grades, plus butter eggs and cheese quotations and recent price movements.

In Toronto on February 23 export cattle were scarce with buyers quick to snap up the few top-quality animals. The day witnessed a peak price of 5.35 dollars, while butcher cattle remained in fair demand as supply stayed tight.
A Teheran despatch notes a January 3 quake injuring Burujurd region in southwestern Persia. Fifteen villages are destroyed or missing, with more than fifty affected overall. Bahrem and Leben appear vanished. no survivors found in those communities. News delay blamed on absence of foreign consuls nearby.

Investigation shows Con Enright formerly of Renfrew Ontario who had worked as a barber in Winnipeg three years killed himself with a razor. He suffered ill health, cut his jugular vein at a woodpile, wandered to car tracks and died after brief convulsions as oncoming trains crushed his chest and arm.
At Canadian Pacific Steamships headquarters plans were announced to equip all Pacific liners with large Marconi wireless gear. An engineer and team travel from England to install the apparatus, which can send messages up to five hundred miles, enabling aid calls to any ship within that radius during disasters.
Hon Chas Murphy secretary of state sponsors a bill to create a department of external affairs. It would be the equivalent of a foreign affairs department and extends the policy begun with William Mackenzie as secretary for imperial and colonial correspondence. Mackenzie may become deputy minister, with the department under the prime minister.
Charlottetown dispatch reports the 1903 fiscal year ends with ordinary expenditures of 277 602 and capital outlay of 43 215 while receipts total 396 601. Major capital items include a new infirmary a new jail at Summerside and permanent bridges with education costing 127 000 as the largest single ordinary expense. Revenue includes a Dominion subsidy 263 681 taxes on commercial travellers 8 090 insurance and other companies 9 000 banks 7 000 income 8 000 land 28 096 roads 11 000 succession duties 5 000.
Strathroy dispatch reports John H. Denning instantly killed and James Lyons with a broken leg after a cave-in at a Kerwood gravel pit six miles west of Strathroy. Several others were digging gravel when the collapse occurred. Denning died within minutes, Lyons was injured, both men were removed from the debris. Denning left a wife and small family.
A Manitoba incorporation bill for the Great Northern Railroad hints at Hill interests plan a transcontinental line from Winnipeg to Brandon and Elk Horn toward the province west boundary. The measure gives five years to start and ten to finish, suggesting a large scale Canadian invasion by Hill.
A Norwood Rhode Island despatch reports four youths Ronghilda Lillian and Amel Hanson and Joseph Johnson all under fifteen drowned when the Sand Pond ice gave way on Wednesday night. One child was barely saved and several rescuers narrowly escaped immersion amid the frigid waters.
