Panthers trip WolverinesBy ROB DURKEE C-T Sports WriterFor Elyria Catholic, it’s a whole lot of new faces. And the same old tactics.Yep, that’s practially a whole new outfit cut there on the basketball floor what with Kevin Calhoun being the lone returning starter. Nope, Bob Guinta’s Panthers haven’t changed much otherwise. The full-court press is still in the Panthers’ repertoire. The 1978-79 edition of Elyria Catholic took up from where its outstanding 22-2 team of 1977-78 left off. The Panthers used a full-court press to take command in the third quarter against invading Elyria West. It added up to a 68-63 victory over the Wolverines in the Erie Coast Conference opener for both teams.FOR EC coach Bob Guinta, the third quarter and some key halftime adjustments paid off. “They hurt us with that press offense all last season,” explained Guinta. “They (West) would have at least one open man and they’d go to him. But we made adjustments...and it worked. The press helped build up some momentum.Indeed, it did. While Elyria Catholic led most of the way in the first half, Elyria West continually stayed close in the extremely fast-paced game. In fact, the visiting Wolverines took a 32-31 lead into the locker-room at halftime. Eight unanswered points late in the second quarter turned a 30-24 deficit into a 32-30 lead for the Wolverines. However, Elyria West would lead only one other time, 34-33, early in the third quarter. Kevin Ziegman, who came off the bench to score 10 points, put EC ahead to stay, 35-34, on a jumper. The Panthers never looked back after that. They led by as many as 18 (65-47). After Ziegman's go-ahead basket, the Panther press twice came up with key turnovers to set the pace for the rest of the game.West coach Tom Binkley lamented those two straight turnovers but was even more disappointed with his team's defensive play for the evening.“Those two passes were lobbed in and were picked off,” Binkley said. “We didn't execute very well. On defense, we were just horrendous. We're just not thinking. It took us three minutes to get into our halfcourt(TURN TO PAGE D*2): v’ •'«*yr* ! »i . oKEVIN CALHOUN of Elyria Catholic has Just launched a short Jump shot attempt despite the presence of three Elyria West players.
