Carpenter, Revealed as Hero of War, Once Sentenced to Die for Desertion1By the Associated Press.BALTIMORE, Md.f November 12.— The Sun said yesterday that a conscientious objector, who was decorated for bravery under fire after being: sentenced to death for desertion from the American Army during: the 'World War, has been virtually identified here as Richard L. Stierheim, formerly a Baltimore carpenter and a member of Company B, 315th Infantry. The story was also carried in this week’s Issue of the Editor and Publisher.Files of the Sun showed, the paper states, that a staff correspondent interviewed Stierheim shortly after his return from France. Stierheim wasdrafted and sent to Camp Meade. Mil., for training, the Sun says. After his arrival in France he refused to drill and was sent to the guardhouse. He deserted, was captured and sentenced to death by court-martial.While awaiting the death sentence, he escaped and rejoined his regiment in the front-line trenches. There his heroism in bringing in wounded under fire attracted the attention cvf officers. ! who recommended clemency, the Sun continued.
