nor..GONE GOOD or ARDS(Condensed from nn Eighth Army Corps Area Story).Already on duty throughout the United States, including the Eighth Corps Area, the City of San Antonio and other Texas localities, is a chosen band of Our Country’s defenders, a band that is dreaded by would-be fifth columnists and other enemies in our midst but of which the public, as yet, know little or nothing. When first called to duty, the members of this remarkable group responded enthusiastically and even noisily. On duty, however, they have been inconspicuous, almost furtive—for theywork by stealth and at night.So far, each one of them has stepped forward readily when called; so far, not one of them has failed in his assignment. Such an incomparable record merits a word ofexplanation. Assuredly their achievement lies in the fact that to their task they have brought such “Characteristically American” attributes as alertness, bodily vigor, keen interest in their duties, a zest for work, an irrepressibly buoyant (and, by the way, 0 contagious) morale; and above all, courage andloyalty.* WAt all events, a seemingly onesided advantage has been taken of them: They draw no monetary pay whatsoever—just subsistence and quarters; they work all night, and are on call all day; they are on duty ail the year round—no holi-Hovy rnvcn Ch mac r\r Vnrr\literally without a sound, but thebootlegger s hound dog or feist orsurly cross-bred bulldog scents them.The dog s nose knows, better thanhis ears or eyes. The law men’s stealthily executed plan degenerates into a dead give-away, amidst a bedlam of barks, baying, yelps, howls and crashing underbrush, if not in a welter of gunfire.Some tricks of the watch dog trade: The animal should be made into a one-man dog by having him fed and handled exclusively by one person, preferably his nightwatch-man partner. It is well to keep the dog chained up by day, and to feed him but once in 24 hours, in the morning, so that he will get that much needed repose before sundown and be hungry and on the prowl by nightfall.
