*D. A. R. WANTS RECORDS OFSOLDIERS OF REVOLUTIONBy RACHAEL K. HARRISFor more than thirty years women of America have been searching through dusty, musty books for war records of Revolutionary ancestors. Today there are more than 135,000 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and thousands are diligently working in order to establish a line by which they are eligible to become members of the D. A.One of the important objects of !the D. A. R. is to assist in the marking of iong-negiected Revolutionary isoldiers’ graves.It is presumed there are possibly thirty soldiers of the Revolution buried in this county. It is known that there are twentj two graves somewhere in the countyQuoting from the state President of the Sons of the Revolution, Cornelius Posson of Indianapolis, who says: •'Handy Handley, born in 1755, Mary- j land, buried in the Old Town cemetery ; in Carlisle.” On the night before the J battle of Trenton he was ordered by j Washington to remain behind, and j keep the campfires burning in order j to deceive the British as to the move- j meat of the American troops. IHis grave is unmarked except each ; year the G. A. R. places a flag there- ■ •a:. Some old settlers recall that many, many yeais ago, memorial day 1 addresses were delivered at his grave, j He has descender.ts living in Carlisle. ;iOther Revolutionary soldiers are: iRobert Eedweli (or Beedwell) j known to have been living in Is iO and 7S years of age at that time. :•John Hopewell, buried in Mt. Olive \ cemetery, northwest of New Lebanon. : He has an appropriate tombstone. On j the monument is carved the cap of the j old soldier, also his gun, sword ahd belt. He (lied Aug. C, 1826. The in- ; scription is A Revolutionary Soldier.” Sarah, Ins wife, died Sept. B, 1S29. (We wonder by whom and when was the monument erected.) Among his descendants is Miss Edna Calvert of this city.In the Burnett cemetery, on the west on the same road, lies another soldier of 177G, Mesheck Hunt. **A Soldier of the Revolution” is the inscription. He was born Dec. 1G, 1706, died Nov. 30, 1849. Sarah, wife, died 1S54, age 84 years.He has numerous descendants in this county. Among the number being Mr. C. D. Hunt of Sullivan.Little Miss Sarah Janette Hunt is the great, great, great grand-daughter of this soldier.At Little Flock cemetery near Shel-burn is the grave of Albert Plough (Plew) an ancestor of Dr. Plew of Hymera. His grave is enclosed by a concrete base and flowers and flags mark the spot each Memorial day. Adam Hart, another soldier buried (Continued on page eight.)
