Two Soldiers Awarded Bronze StarsTwo Butte men. t lieutenant colonel and a private first, class, have been awarded the Bronze Star medal, the War department announced this week. Pfc. George O. Turner was decorated for meritorious service under fire, while Lt. Col. Robert E. White was recognized for outstanding qualities as a personnel officer.Announcement of Pfc. Turner's award was made from Normandy staging command in France. A radio operator with an engineer combat regiment, he was decorated for action during the battle for theRhineland. The citation reads in part: ’Pfc. Turner, while scouting ahead of the remainder of the regiment, came under heavy enemy fire. He immediately communicated his location and situation back to his regiment, warning them of the enemy positions. A heavy patrol was sent ahead and soon wiped out the German opposition.'*Pfc. Turner is the son of Mrs. Fannie Turner, 109 Boardman. His division, which participated in the French, Belgium. Luxembourg and German campaigns, now operates three camps in France where troops leaving Europe are assembled prior to shipment.Lt. Col. White’s citation, announced from 15th A. A. F. service command headquarters in Italy, reads: In the closing months of 1944, it was decided to form new air service groups, attach them to Individual bombardment groups and thus maintain a closer liaison with the tactical forces they serviced. Col. White was assigned the supervision of allocating personnel from the old type group to the new units. The resultant formation of smoothly functioning organizations is a direct reflection of Col. White's knowledge of A-l and the many personnel problems encountered in a personnel transition of such magnitude, completed without damaging operational efficiency. His tactful diplomacy and skillful response to the numerous issues of personnel work, as well as an extraordinary devotion to duty, mark him as an exceptionally outstanding officer and offer a steadilv increasing contribu-tion to the achievements of the 15th Air force service command aiding materially in the successes of the 15th Air force.”Lt. Col. White resided at 2026 South Gaylord before entering service in 1940. He is a graduate of Montana State university and has been on foreign duty since February 1944. His wife resides at Forrest City, Ark. while his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. White, live inPortland, Ore.
