Gallahnn, from his son, Glen, in France.France, November 23, 1918.Dear FatherJust came in from having our pictures taken, that is the Company, do not know fhow good they will bo but if anil possible chance am going to havd one.It has been impossible to tell anything worth while, so now I will give you some of the history of my life since arriving in this country. First of all 1 came over in the Pastorcs w^ich carried somewhere about two thousand men. We were about twelve days on our Nvny over. Landed at St.Maguire, France. Wo stayed there about eight or nine days then wo were sent to a small French village about sixteen miles from Besuncon. That is the townclose ionti-from rdum much i the and msant rt as never Ulcers com-in a good u see hope u allwhere the big cllt;K:k is that I spoke about befoie. We (lew a ballooncan-almost every duy.cxccpt on Saturday and Sunday. We had that time for ourselves, after Saturday morning inspection. Most of the time we had passes to Besuncon but not all the time. From there wo were sent up near tho front line trenches. That is where wc.are now about twenty miles from Toni ftnd somewhere the same distance from Metz. No use to t«ll the name of the smaller towns as they are not on the maps you people have at home. That Hindenberg line sure is some place. Have cement dug-outs. There was one dug-out that they had for their headquarters. It was built in 1915 -and no doubt most of them were built then. They had trenches running from one dug-out to another. Most of them were six, feet deep and some were deeper yet. This place I spoke about those dug-outs was up on a big hill where there were lots of pine trees. You would never know it to stand back and look toward it, but when you get there, sure is somo wonderful places. This is a fine place to get souviners but it is going to be very hard to bring them batjk to the old U. S. A. I had some but got tired carrying them so threw them away. We have enough to carry away with us let alone having a lot of such junk.We are not far from the hill where the statue of Joan of Arc is. -I have never been there as there is a guard placed where we cross the river. Also along the road where we go up to the hill.It ’ Enrh: but h chasi overEzsnipeAh have fur t Sam bund conti it is j■* Fhtownas facapersomesiciaiit woformuteswisepectiIt has been said there are mines dcly for ive a We )w or her.I can your Qtober e re-y6u. write, ing toill myxrp,Eng.E. As to where I don’t know but I hope toward some seaport. •In the morning when wo get up1 first thing we have to get up somo wood, then drill, probably take a hike in the morning and one in the afternoon to keep in order for the Final one.Say, be sure and have that Buick in good order because I will make use of it some of these days. Yesterday afternoon another fellow and myself went to a small French village where there was a canteen. I got in line and stood there about an hour and a half. Just as we got up to the window they closed it. Sure some luck but I can stand it until I get back to the States.• Have plenty to eat but very little pie and cake but of course wo could not expect it like we were at Home. But neverless have no room to say anything.Mu9t close, wishing the family a trainMerry Christmas also a Happy ingtlt;• * i • •New Year. . spruYour Son, in laG.Gallahan, Was14 Balloon Co., MidAmer. E.
