Middlesex Crisis Sparks Livery of London Debate

An allegorical letter criticizes the Lords and common council over charter, urging the London livery to convene a petition to the King. The writer denounces misrepresentation of Charles II’s act, defends lawful assembly, and warns against encroachments on liberty. He cites the need for constitutional action amid alleged ministerial mockery.

London May 3 Expresses summon Great Assembly

Expresses are sent to all parts of the kingdom to summon members of a great assembly for present day affairs. Four members in Paris are also recalled. A petition to the king on public affairs fate would likely carry, and another Common-council may be sought. Harley Alderman praised the chief magistrate’s impartial conduct. A list shows Common Council members present and their votes on calling a common-half, with names and wards recorded.
