London City Election Sees Oliver Elected Amid Livery Cheers
Long ceremony at Guildhall records Aldermen honored and Wilkes resigns as candidate. Richard Oliver, citizen and draper, is proclaimed MP for the City of London after a vocal livery display. Oliver pledges public welfare, independence, and opposition to monopolies, amid debates on parliamentary reform and duty to Middlesex and broader Britain. The event follows mixed notices on Lord Mayors, records, and political tensions of the era.
