Doctor Leighton and Star Chamber abuses described
The Middlesex Journal cites past cases to condemn Star Chamber methods and arbitrary imprisonment. It recalls Dr Leighton’s torture in Newgate and Fleet Prisons, his perpetual confinement coupled with fines, pillory, branding, and amputation threats, and argues for adherence to Magna Charta protections and trial by jury amid current suspicions of unlawful detentions. A later note reports the death of Sir Job Brook at Scorton and the estate passing to Mrs Jenkins.
