Proteus Trial Over Wheat Smuggling in 1772
In the Sir Joseph Proteus case a warrant searched the mill of de fector Proteus for smuggled wheat. The court heard that wheat mixed with barley was found and that Proteus used his child as a shield against seizure. The constable, aided by law, retained possession until near midnight, and witnesses described the minister’s misconduct. The jury found the defendants guilty though the penalty and forfeiture await the King’s Bench decision. August 19, 1772.
