British Gage reports rebel activity near Bolton and martial law proclaimed
From the London Gazette dated July 18 1775 General Gage describes Bolton surrounded by rebel provincials and islands cut off. Rebels burn houses drive off sheep and an armed schooner is burned after drifting dry at low tide. Two killed and two wounded. Embarkation of three infantry regiments and one light cavalry arrives at Boston. Proclamation offers pardon to those who lay down arms except Adams and Hancock. Martial law to be enforced in Massachusetts Bay. Also notes harvest in Sicily and a royal tour observations in Madrid and news from Gasparina about a fleet that failed near Lind due to easterly winds.

Marriage and murder verdicts in Monmouthshire tale
In Aberga venny and nearby districts on a Wednesday last, John Yarnold was committed to Monmouth gaol on suspicion of robbing and assaulting Mrs Mary Edwards wife of Robert Edwards. A coroner’s inquest found fatal bruises causing putrefaction. Yarnold found guilty of wilful murder.
