Proconsul Fails to Burn Early Christian Martyr
In September 1809 Wis. the Proconsul refused a lion and ordered a martyr burned for professing Christianity. Palycarp, named Teacher of Afta, accepted the fire with faith, praying to God as fuel was gathered by a hostile crowd inclining toward the execution. The mob pressed for death as the preparations began.
