Hyrcanus I and Judean Rise Amid Turmoil and Conflicts
Antiochus sent Cendebeus to subdue Judea. Simon and his sons repelled the force, then Simon allied with Rome. In AD 135, Ptolemy murdered Simon’s sons. Hyrcanus seized the throne and High Priesthood. Antiochus later besieged Jerusalem, peace granted with tribute. Hyrcanus expanded borders, freed from Syrian tribute, and forced Edomites to embrace Judaism. He captured Shechem, destroyed Samaria, and ruled Judea, Galilee, and nearby towns for 29 years, then ideological rift with Pharisees led him to abandon their sect and ally with Sadducees.
