Pillars Found Underground Like a Desolate Quarry
An extended description details underground pillars 15 to 20 inches wide and 15 to 36 feet tall with pentagonal or hexagonal forms. Some pillars have seven sides, others three to eight, built from joined segments that separate into concave and convex faces. The basalt-like stone is extremely hard, heavy, and unsuitable for building as it dulls tools. The columns run for nearly two miles along the shore, forming a rare natural spectacle. The piece ends with reflections on God and a brief aside about two small foreign birds and an excerpt from the Philosophical Transactions.
