Disaster Aboard Vessel as Wind Breaks Jib Gear and Sinks
The storm wrecks the ship as sheets break and the rudder is unshipped leaving the vessel unmanageable. Water pours into the hold and cabin while passengers cling to tarpaulins and hope to reach shore. One passenger, Mr Thornton, loses his wife and son, and others are drawn from the flooded cabin before the ship sinks on the beach.
