Imprisoned Nonconformist Pastor Faces Long Custody
In 1679 Grovce Fownes of Bristol, a pastor to Anti podia Baptists, was jailed in Gloucester for refusing the Corporation oath and for riding near a city boundary. Held six months as witnesses were sought, he was later found Not Guilty by a jury, yet remained imprisoned two and a half years until his death in December 1685 amid serious illness.
