Recruiting Movement in Victoria Falls Short of Goals
In Victoria the recruiting push exceeds expectations with over one thousand men per day enrolled, lifting Australia’s total past 100000. A Bacchus Marsi meeting at the Mechanics' Institute drew a large crowd but yielded few concrete results as time constraints and interruptions limited proceedings. Dr J Wills chaired and teased an interjector, Hon W H Kelly spoke, yet no broad enlistment drive followed. Russell Clarke addressed attendees while Angliss and Robertson did not appear. One recruit, Patrick Barry, passed after examination. Wills offered himself in Melbourne but was rejected due to age. A Red Cross collection raised £12 16s 2d, including a £5 gift from Mr Thomas Anderson.
