Soldier Letters from Cairo Dispatch Reveal Promotion
Color-Sergeant T. C. Waterhouse, from Bacchus Marsh with the First Expeditionary Force, writes from Cairo on January 9 that he is now a full-blown Sergeant-Major. The 1914 British Army reorganization is described, with sergeants shuffled and four new SM positions. Waterhouse notes four fine chaps in C Company and recounts a daring recon near the enemy trenches. He crawled in socks to 250 yards, ears on edge, then withdrew after 100 minutes of listening, narrowly avoiding exposure if the attack had been real. He signs off wishing safety and reporting he is “quite alright, and going strong.”
