Farmers Contributing to Patriotic Sale in a Princely Manner

Contributions to the big Patriotic Sale on Saturday January 19 continue to pour in. The committee is arranging final details with the sale and an army of clerks is expected. Donations include livestock, cash, and assorted goods from numerous contributors, with many items listed and valued, reflecting wide community support.

Oddfellows and Rebekahs of Melfort Lodges installed officers for the current term in a ceremonious meeting led by F C Bro W J Grainger. Pleasantdale Red Cross Celebrates New Year at School House

Pleasantdale Red Cross society held a New Year’s Eve gathering in the school house with a large crowd. George Neville managed the door and $40 was turned over to the treasurer, including $17 from selling pure bird roosters. Unit sales by two young girls added silver to the fund, aided by vice president Mrs. Palmer and Secretary Mrs. Coulter.

Death of Mrs George Wallace in Beatty

Mrs. George Wallace, 62, died at Beatty on Wednesday January 9 after a brief illness. A Ontario native who had lived in Beatty 14 years, she leaves husband, two daughters Gladys and Lucinda, son Herbert, three brothers in Beatty and Assiniboia, and Ontario relatives. Funeral held January 12 with a house service and Mount Pleasant cemetery interment. A large crowd attended despite severe weather.

Creamery 9 Reports On Large Convention and Dairy Plans

The Creamery 9 notes a large convention in the province with attentive hearing and broad participation. Speakers emphasized farming produce for home use and stock, urging cow testing to weed out undesirables for beef, with Prime Ministerial and agricultural officials delivering addresses on dairy and beef production.

Pleasant Valley Red Cross Monthly Meeting Notes

The Pleasant Valley Red Cross society held its regular meeting at Mrs Resolutions were passed to buy more knitting and sewing supplies and send 450 to headquarters in Regina along with 200 from the Pleasant Valley Junior Red Cross. Red Cross Tea Fund Raised in Melfort Host House Event

The South Melfort Red Cross tea on January 2, 1918 at Mrs W Armstrong's raised 18.20. Proceeds support work by Mrs Dykstra who turned in three sacks and Mrs W Armstrong four pairs. Next meeting set for February 3 at Mrs Crompton's.

Pathiow Red Cross Holds January Meeting and Auction

The Pathiow Red Cross met January 2 at Mrs. Wm Hodger’s home with strong attendance. An apron auction raised 20 dollars, batter sold for 12.50 to Alex Downie after a reauction, boosting total to 83.50. Afternoon tea funds added 3.50 and other teas added 10.50 7.00. A big fundraising effort for Melfort on the 19th will be organized by Abr Ambler at Mrs. Gee Woods’ home February 6 at 2.80.

Fire Sweeps Farmhouse. Family Burned and Frostbitten

Early Saturday a coal oil can explosion near a stove caused a fire at a farm home in Bjorkdale district. A seven or eight year old boy, his parents, and two small children escaped through the bitter cold, though frostbite and burns followed. Neighbors aided the family as the home burned to ashes, with only a small amount of money saved. The family was treated at Lady Minto hospital in Melfort.

Moser and Bishop Open New Hardware Store in Melfort

Business partners of Mosers Moser and Bishop begin operations in Melfort after stock taking week. Mr Moser, formerly at J F Cairns Saskatoon, brings experience and a solid oak desk set. Mr Bishop, long with Merrick Anderson Winnipeg, known as a road knight. They plan to expand stock to meet rising district demand as first shipment arrives within two weeks.

Herd Law Abolished in Northern Province After June 1 1910

Legislation passed by the Legislature amends The Btray Animale Act to abolish herd law in the northern part of the province effective June 1 1910. Affected areas include portions north of the rural Now 24 entries and related map references.

Presbyteran and Methodist Churches Plan Unified Evangelistic Campaign

A united evangelistic effort will begin on Sunday February 3 led by Rev H B Gilbert of Winnipeg and Merl T McPherson of Chicago. Gilbert will preach, McPherson will lead music and soldier the event. Dibble family from Trail arrived to stay in the Horn cottage.
