Anxious volunteers in Melfort anticipate a second call to join Canada’s war effort. Dozens have already submitted requests, with seven visitors recently asking for enlistment papers. Lieut G E Hunt of H Company 52nd Regt will accept names and addresses of legitimate applicants eager to serve the king and country.
Rev Rural Dean Clarke presided at a large meeting at All Saints church with incumbents and delegates from Anglican posts across the district. Clarke was elected rural dean for three years, A Croes re‑elected secretary, and various clerical and lay delegates chosen for diocesan and magazine committees. A hearty welcome was extended to Rev CO. L. Mortimer as new rector of Melfort.
In a letter to a Melfort friend volunteers preparing to depart Prince Albert on Sunday reassure they feel fine and eager to reach the front soon. Pte. R. E. Slader notes a serious resolve beneath a jocular front to uphold the regiment’s honor and fight in the great war. Tisdale will be represented at the front and Allan of the post staff has joined the 2ithr Light Horse at Valcartier.
A CN R passenger train was derailed Sunday night when a broken lock and a switched balf caused the engine to topple and mail baggage cars to leave the track. No serious injuries reported. Three foreigners reportedly arrested. unconfirmed. Police and volunteers, including Steff-Sergeant Loin rof Melfort and Sergeant Prime of Prince Albert, at scene.
The Dominion Government has revised homestead rules to aid settlers. Key points include: when patent is earned a pre-emption patent may be obtained with full payment and proof of duties performed. pre-emption holders incur no interest for three years from entry. no interest on instalments until due. no refunds if both principal and interest have been paid. stock may substitute cultivation under certain restrictions.
A. B. Pordy of Prince Albert announces a meeting at Rothwell school on Saturday August 20 at 8 30 pm. Grain Growers' agent W. J. Powell urges all local farmers to attend for discussions on timely topics. Also notes cattle tender at James Smith Reserve and bands of three year old steers sold for 46 65.
The Fletts Springs Rural Telephone Co plans to complete its line in about two weeks with 120 subscribers. Subscriptions require a five dollar note to Secretary Ambler to purchase a share and gain telephone connection. The system will span over 100 miles and be operated from the central switchboard at Melfort, soon linking all intended subscribers.
An item notes Mr. Stenhouse plans a return to Melfort for his business auction sale scheduled on September 4, indicating a forthcoming local commerce event and ties to the town’s activities.
