Melfort farmers urged to submit growth samples for exhibition

The Melfort Board of Trade requests farmers to bring in grain and vegetable samples by August 20. Exhibits will be sent to the East and the States, with first class wheat oats and barley favored, plus root crops. Local growers are asked to cooperate, and all items will be labeled with farm and locality.

Saskatchewan Medical Association Convention Gathers Saskatoon

The Saskatchewan Medical Association holds its annual convention in Saskatoon on August 18 19 and 20. Dr J M Elder of McGill and Dr A B Gordon of Toronto will deliver addresses and clinics. Over 30 physicians and surgeons will present papers, with Dr W Harry Godfrey of Melfort among the speakers.

Arson Charge Filed Against Star City Veterinary Surgeon

A J Kelleher veterinary surgeon of Star City and once a Melfort figure will face police court at 9 am to answer arson accusations. He allegedly set fire to F Ortloff's livery stable at Star City around July 20. A preliminary examination was held at Star City and adjournment agreed. the case will be continued at Melfort on Monday.

Creamery Butter Output Rises With Strong July Yield

The Mel fort creamery reports butter output running about a thousand pounds weekly ahead of last year and a favorable yearly trend. The week’s make test shows 5816 pounds up from 4421, a gain of 1395 pounds. For July total production reached 27,231 pounds versus 24,228 last year, signaling a robust season in the province.

Firsting at Nethery on Monde

The first threshing of this season’s crop in the black loam belt began Monday as Wm Goodson of Naisberry ran barley through the separator. First wheat cutting occurred at Jack Woolworth’s farm in the Naisberry area. Goodson’s barley suffers from the dry spell but should provide ample feed, with insured straw against rain.

Veteran of the Veldt Anxious to Serve Again

South Melfort resident George Wingham rushed to join the Canadian front volunteers after learning a contingent would depart. He served fourteen months in the South African War with Hants Yeomanry. Captain Goodwillie works to place him in Company H of the 52nd Regiment before the 4 PM Saturday cutoff. Many others hope to enlist with the second contingent.

Rousing Rally of Patriotic Citizens in Melfort

A large crowd gathered for a patriotic parade and town hall rally led by the Canadian Club in Melfort. Participants included the 52nd, town band, veterans, and local officers. speeches by J R Long and others followed by patriotic songs, despite light rain shortening the parade.

Bad Spill When Bubble Upsets

Auctioneer Frank Smith and plumber Donald McLaughlin survived a crash in Silver Park when a Ford overturned after hitting a rut. Smith suffered cracked ribs and other injuries while McLaughlin had a bruised face and a pinned head but both escaped with their lives. The car sustained minor damage and both men expect to recover after several days in bed.

School Opens Here Monday Aug 24 With New Teachers

Fresh after a long holiday the Melfort public school will resume Monday morning August 24. The high school rooms open Tuesday September 1. Mise M. Stark of Marshall Sask joins the local teaching staff and will head the second primary. Miss M V McCammis of Anijen Man will replace Miss Sinclair on the high school staff.

Departure of Mr and Mrs F W Shaw From Melfort

Mr and Mrs F W Shaw plan to move to Mecklin next week ending their nearly two year stay in Melfort. Their departure is deeply deplored by the community of Erients and Mrs Shaw resigned as Noble Grand of Secord Rebekah Lodge. A social gathering honored the couple after the meeting.

Government road work halted amid wartime cuts

Lovell the district road superintendent returned from Regina with government directives to pull off all road and bridge gangs. Due to the war the treasury is greatly handicapped and construction province wide is suspended, leaving many men available for harvest work locally.

Few Assessment Cases to Judge

At the adjourned court of revision on Friday a few alterations were made in the assessment and it is expected that not more than one or two cases will come before the judge. Beatty withdrew objections for self and clients owing to unsettled conditions. Smart, the appellant with the largest amount of property, has also been satisfied.

Pioneer John Stewart of Melfort District Passes Away

John Stewart, longtime Pioneer and early Melfort district resident, died between Monday night and Tuesday morning at his son Leopold Stewart’s home after a month of arterial disease. He was 61 or 62 and survived by a wife who preceded him five years ago, five or more children in Canada. Funeral services are held today at the Leopold Stewart residence with Presbyter church rites before interment at Mt Pleasant cemetery.
