TERRIFIC EXPLOSION OF A BOILER AND LOSS OF THREE LIVES
A boiler explosion at the East India Cements Company works on Specimen Hill killed three men and injured several others. Engine driver David Campbell and worker John Collins died instantly. a 19 year old boy named Arthur Stamers also perished. The blast destroyed the engine house and spread debris across the site, with witnesses attributing the tragedy to low water in the boiler and possible equipment flaws. An inquest held at the Eureka Hotel returned a verdict of deaths by severe skull fractures from the explosion and blamed either engine driver incompetence or thin boiler plate, or both.
