Russia China treaty signed at Peking in 1858 described

The Friend of China publishes a translation of a treaty signed at Peking on November 14 between Russia and China. It cedes to Russia a seaboard stretch from the Amoor mouth to the Tumen, 900 miles long and 100 to 200 miles wide. The deal, five days after Lord Elgin left the city, augments Russia’s access for or against China. Also recounted is a horrific January 18 accident aboard the Emerald near the Isle of Wight. Captain Barton, a passenger, was pulled into a skylight by the engine crank and torn apart, dying instantly. The incident occurred near Norris Castle and Osborne House. Barton was between 40 and 60 years old.
