Foe Defends Vienna Area Oil Refineries Hit By Allied Air Offensive

MAAP headquarters reports a strong air offensive against dwindling petroleum supplies near Vienna. Fifteen AAFP heavies attacked six refineries around Schwecht Winterhafen Lobau Floridsdorfer Kernenberg and Moosbierbaum as Fortresses Liberators and escort fighters pounded targets. Italian Drive Ranked With Foremost Smuts Visit

Advanced Allied Headquarters reports Marshal Smuts called the Italian campaign among history’s foremost. The 74 year old elder statesman toured front line areas in Italy and Normandy with Churchill, praising the advance and noting the terrain’s difficulties and defensive advantages. He spoke with ground and air units and with Generals Clark and Alexander, driving discussions during the tour.

Four More Spots Open For GIs In Rome

In Rome June 26 four more restaurants will open this week to feed GIs. Two cafés will serve American soldiers at 1130 hours Wednesday and a third opens Saturday near the Vatican. A fourth spot will feed French troops of the 5th Army. British and Indian service men soon gain access to additional canteens under welfare supervision.

Yanks Take Cherbourg After Fierce Street Battle

Allied forces completed the capture of Cherbourg in a hard fought assault lasting 58 hours.
