On Okinawa the last Japanese troops stall at rugged southern hills near Oroku Peninsula and Shuri as American forces push to isolate pockets. Nimitz reports Japanese air raids disrupted shipping with twelve planes shot down while advancing Marines and tanks secure the peninsula area.
Allied air and sea forces pressed the eight day of bombardment on Borneo's eastern and northwestern coasts as Pacific and Commonwealth units attacked. MacArthur reported no Allied confirmation of Labuan Island invasion claims while Tokyo cited a hypothetical 100 vessel fleet and a landed division. In northern Luzon, American troops pushed eight miles along the Cagayan Valley road, capturing towns and breaking deeper into Japanese defenses.

In Berlin, U S Presidentials envoy Harry Hopkins conferred with Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov who has been named chief of the Soviet Occupation Army and head of the Soviet military administration. Zhukov’s new posts were announced by Berlin radio last night. He will also serve as the Soviet representative on the Allied Control Commission.
London diplomatic sources say Francisco Franco failed to win Don Juan’s acceptance of a four-man regency to restore the monarchy. Franco pushes anti Communist arrests to tighten control while Falange ministers remain in place and monarchist support remains limited in Madrid and major cities.
