Railways face legal challenge to grain freight rate move

Provincial government lawyer M A MacPherson argued before transport commissioners that railways cannot implement part of their grain freight rate plan in the west, basing the challenge on the long and short haul rule. CPR traffic chief Harry Arkle testified that removing the hold down could lift returns by about 3.2 million dollars annually and worsen rate disparities.

Two Toronto criminals sentenced to death for murder

Steve Suchan and Leonard Jackson, once unknown, were sentenced to hang on December 16 for the murder of Toronto detective Edmund Tong. The pair, linked to Edwin Boyd and William Jackson, faced a six day trial after a high profile manhunt ending in capture in North York.

Good Weather for Fifteen Days Ends Harvest In Alberta

Alberta harvest progresses with 85 percent of wheat and 95 percent of barley threshed in Lethbridge area. Area northeast of Edmonton faces delays from moisture. Grande Prairie reports 40 percent wheat and 80 percent barley threshed. Average wheat yield forecast at about 27.5 bushels per acre, higher than 1951, with frost expected to affect grades but improve overall quality.

Brooks Post Office To Open Tomorrow

A new federal building to house the Brooks post office RCMP barracks cells veterans affairs and agriculture offices will be officially opened tomorrow in the capital. The Brooks Board of Trade and town council sponsor ceremonies with guests Senator F W Gershaw MP W D Wylie MLA W E Cain Mayor L R McEntee and B J Farrell regional postal director. The Brooks band attends and a half holiday is declared for school children.

Keen Bidding at Yearling Ram Sale Stampede Grounds

Keen bidding was evident for about 125 yearling rams at the stampede grounds with prices from 30 to 40 dollars per head. Each seller placed a reserve bid of 30 dollars. Manning says Alberta backs export rules after informal talks

Premier Manning states Alberta unchanged on natural gas exports and that last week’s Toronto talks with Premier Frost were informal chats. Alberta will permit gas exports only if surplus to provincial needs. export permits require Alberta Conservation Board approval. Alberta supports a national fuel policy with federal cooperation to use coal gas and oil efficiently. The Delhi Oil Co. case on a proposed eastbound gas line remains under board consideration with action deferred to April.
