London reports 43 German planes shot down in today’s air battles. Eleven raiders crashed. British losses total 16, with eight pilots safe. Night raids hit Merseyside and the southeast coast. churches and a pavilion damaged, several casualties.
London reports state German fighter swarms act as air cavalry to punch through defenses and allow heavy bombers to strike. Analysts say raids show Luftwaffe failures. RAF gains in fighters and bombers plus a so far unseen new weapon to counter nightly London bombing.
Prime Minister King called on Canadians to donate to the 5,000,000 drive of the Canadian Red Cross Society to amplify its voice amid war. He spoke at the Red Cross program opening broadcast nationally via the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, praising Red Cross compassion and services.
Two members of the non permanent active militia in Moncton New Brunswick were fined five dollars each for missing drill. Magistrate W F Lane ruled N P A M members must attend drills or provide legitimate reasons under military regulations. In Ottawa National Defence headquarters explained fines apply when absence occurs without leave and the commanding officer files information in court.
A 1934 automobile was stolen from the garage of A. T. Legge after 11 p.m. Police traced the vehicle 10 miles out on the Lethbridge highway where it was found overturned and badly damaged. The thief appeared injured. insurance covered the car. Police continue their investigation as identity remains unknown.
Lawrence Polland about 20 of Weyburn was killed when the car failed to take a curve on a highway six miles north of Melfort Saskatchewan Saturday night.
The Redcliff branch of the Red Cross shipped 18 sacks of fresh vegetables and 14 dozen sealed cans of vegetables to Calgary for immediate use in response to an urgent Junior Red Cross appeal. Western cooperation is highlighted.
London demanded explanations from Bucharest after reports that Canadian mining engineer Treacy and four British men were detained in a Bucharest jail on sabotage charges. Officials said Treacy’s group, tied to Romano Americano Oil, were allegedly tortured into signed confessions while the detainees spoke only in whispers and faced prolonged delays before consular access.
The Department of National Defence announced that canteens in non-permanent active militia training centers opening Oct 9 will be dry. Officials also reported the capture near Kingston Ontario of Klaus Schoessing who escaped from an Ontario internment camp. Senator H W Laird of Regina and Ottawa died at 72 after a long illness at his summer home.
A flotilla of former United States destroyers, flying the Royal Navy ensign, arrived in a UK port after a 2500 mile Atlantic run from an East Coast Canadian port. The group, damaged only by an apparent submarine attack that failed to hit, heads into port ready for social duties or convoy work as anti invasion craft.
London reports indicate Britain may reopen the Burma road to supply China after consulting the United States. The road, ordered closed for three months from July 17, was to reopen October 18 if fresh agreement with Japan failed. House of Commons debates likely as disquiet over Japan’s Axis ties grows.
The Foreign Policy Association reported that the prolonged fighting in China has deprived Japan of the economic margin needed for a large-scale war with another power. The study notes Japan's military and economic resources are heavily mortgaged for China, with about one million troops and much shipping and air power involved. It calls China the major ally and first line of defense for Western powers in Asia and says Western support may determine defense success.
Hon. N. E. Tanner provincial lands and mines minister and Robert E. Allen newly appointed chairman of the Alberta Petroleum and Natural Gas Conservation Board left Edmonton by plane Saturday to survey prospective oil fields. They may visit the Pouce Coupe field in British Columbia and on return will survey oil fields east of Edmonton.

Air Marshal W A Bishop V C today unfurled the new Royal Canadian Air Force flag in England during a visit to the Canadian Army Co operation Squadron. The blue flag features a Union Jack in the corner and a red maple leaf inside a blue ring. The design, approved by the King, was conceived in Canada.
The Rotary Club states profits from its October 31 to November 2 carnival will fund approved war charities under the War Charities Act. Government permits, past contributions, and a surplus in the community service fund support redirecting proceeds to aid civilian war needs and Canadian armed forces.
Eleven thousand mothers and children were moved from London to the countryside over the weekend, part of a record exodus since the air raids began. The total displaced rises to between 75,000 and 100,000 as more evacuees leave from bombed East End districts to London stations. Officials plan for thousands more to depart in the coming weeks.
