Canada cut its current transactions deficit with other nations to 236 million dollars in the first half of 1968 from 614 million in the same period 1967. April to June posted a 3 million dollar surplus, the first quarterly balance of payments surplus in nearly 16 years, led by US trade and a shift to capital inflows. Exports rose 16 percent, driven by automotive products, copper and iron ores, steel alloys and plates. imports up eight percent mainly due to US automotive purchases. Travel receipts fell but the second quarter travel deficit was only 8 million, the smallest since 1950 except 1967. Six-month receipts totaled 314 million, down 114 million from last year.
