Brooks head coach Joe Buckler defended his decision to go for the win over Medicine Hat Mohawks with 34.5 seconds left in the opener, a game they lost 8-7. The Buffs, now 2-1, prepare for a Friday rematch as Hat High and Crescent Heights also jockey for top league position.
The McCoy Colts senior girls volleyball team defeated the Senator Gershow Gators in straight sets to win the Eagle Butte high school tournament title in Dunmore. After a round robin loss to the Gators, the Colts swept Talons in the semifinals 25-16 25-22, then beat the Gators 25-18 25-23 in the final. The Gators had earlier toppled W.R. Myers 25-15 25-22 in their semifinal. In the boys’ side, Crescent Heights led Pool B but lost to Willow Creek 25-17 25-21, while Winston Churchill edged RP Walsh 25-18 25-14 before Willow Creek clinched the final 26-24 25-19. A photo shows McCoy Colts’ Jericka Versikaitis challenging a block. no score was reported.
Eagle Butte distance runner Courtney Heinricks won her age category at the Peace Hills Invitational in Wetaskiwin with an 18:59 time. Her victory helped the Lady Talons take first in the high school girls team standings as Mitch Norquay and other Talons posted top finishes. Eagle Butte to host South Zone meet Oct. 10 and provincials Oct. 20.
Ryan Werre of Hat finished tied for second at the Alberta High School golf championship at Lethbridge Country Club. Red Deer's Notre Dame Academy star Carson Kallis won with a two under 148, while Werre shot 74 and 78 for 152, facing competitors up to two years older in a 119-player field.
